  • The Birth of a Project

    THE IDEA:

    • CREATIVE ENDEAVOR TO DEVELOP A SINGLE FORM THAT COULD BE REPLICATED TO GIVE SHAPE TO A LARGER OBJECT.

     

    THE COURSE OF ACTION:

    • MERGE TWO PRIMARY SHAPES, THE CIRCLE AND THE SQUARE. ON 2' X 2' GRID SQUARE, FORMING HALF OF A PENDENTIVE.
    • THE CIRCLE WAS PLACED IN THE CENTER OF THE GRID TO REINFORCE ITS INHERENT CENTRALITY, GIVING IT A NORMAL STABLE QUALITY.
    • THE PRIMARY SQUARE SHAPE WHICH HAS NO DIRECTION IS PURE, AND NEUTRAL FURTHER ENHANCES THE PERSONALITY OF THE CIRCLE OF RATIONAL AND STATIC.

     

    THE EQUATION:

    • CIRCLE + SQUARE + GRID = PENDENTIVE

     

    PENDENTIVE:

    • DEFINE: THE CURVED TRIANGLE SURFACE THAT RESULTS WHEN THE TOP CORNER OF A SQUARE SPACE IS VAULTED SO AS TO PROVIDE A CIRCULAR BASE FOR A DOME.
    • THE RESULT OF THREE REGULAR DESIGN ELEMENTS (CIRCLE, SQUARE, AND GRID) PRODUCES A DYNAMIC IRREGULAR FORM.

The Cultivation of an Idea

THE THEORY:

  • ORIGINAL DESIGN GRID HAD A DIMENSIONS OF 28' X 18'
  • DESIGN GRID WAS EXPANDED BY A FACTOR OF 100, RESULTING A GRID DIMENSION OF 2800' X 1800'
  • TO PRODUCE A MIXED USE COMMERCIAL AND RESIDENTIAL USES.

THE PATTERN:

  • THE REPETITIVE PATTERN PRODUCED THE PENDENTIVE IS IMPOSED ON THE CITY GRID. THE DESIGN IMPOSES TWO RULES:
    • (1) THE PENDENTIVE FORM WILL BE GREEN SPACES
    • (2) PUBLIC SPACES WILL DEVELOP WHERE THE PENDENTIVE FORM INTERACTS WITH THE CITY GRID.
    • THE PENDENTIVE DIVIDES THE CITY GRID'S PRIMARY ROADS ALONG COMMERCIAL ROADS, WHICH WILL HOLD COMMERCIAL PROPERTIES (RETAIL & OFFICE SPACES, HOSPITALITY)
    • SECONDARY ROADS FORM THE REMAINING CITY GRID LINE, WHICH WILL HOLD RESIDENTIAL PROPERTIES (SINGLE FAMILY HOMES, TOWN HOUSES, APARTMENTS, CONDOMINIUMS)
